課程概述

Style can be a mystery for novice and even intermediate writers. Slightly more than a century ago, William Strunk composed The Elements of Style, a writing guide for his Cornell students. Slightly more than half a century ago, E. B. White revised and expanded the book into the writer’s Bible it has since become. The lasting popularity of The Elements of Style probably evidences, while also intensifies, the quandary facing many writers in training when it comes to style. What is style? What counts as good style? How do we write with good style? This course will address these questions to enhance students’ appreciation and command of writing style. We will reflect on the received wisdom as well as various myths regarding style, so as to refine our understanding of writing and to come up with a set of working principles for better writing. In the meantime, we will put these principles to use in writing assignments and workshops. With constant practice, students will be able to acquire a better style and become proficient writers.
